House Speaker Mike Johnson said he is pursuing the construction of a statue honoring the late conservative commentator Charlie Kirk at the U.S. Capitol, according to a social media post circulating Tuesday.
The claim, reported by the account Leading Report, said Johnson is seeking to move forward with the statue, though no formal proposal, legislation or official statement from Johnson’s office was immediately available to confirm.
Any addition to the Capitol’s statuary collection typically requires congressional approval and must comply with longstanding rules governing monuments and artwork in the Capitol complex. Those decisions are often reviewed by the Architect of the Capitol and relevant congressional committees.
It was also unclear where the proposed statue would be placed, how it would be funded or what timeline, if any, is being considered.
Charlie Kirk, before his death earlier this year, was the founder of Turning Point USA, a conservative youth organization that has played a prominent role in Republican politics in recent years.
